Holiday Gift Guide for your Host Family

It’s November which means that everyone in England is getting ready for Christmas. And Christmas means presents. Now, as an au pair, you’re not obligated to buy your host family anything. I like to, though, just to show them I love and appreciate them.

Unfortunately, my host parents read this blog so I can’t actually talk about the really good gifts that I’m getting them. But these are more general gift ideas. Which was also really hard because I kept thinking about what they would like (and not all of the things on the list are things I would buy them)…

Presents for the host kids

  • The gift of travel
My host mum has decided to stop buying the kids toys and instead she’s giving them the gift of travel. You can do this as well. Take the kids somewhere for a day (or two, with permission from the host parents).
  • Board games (if you don’t mind playing these with the kids)
  • A photo album
Blank, filled with photos or in combination with a cheap disposable camera
  • Toys
Not a big fan of these. The kids already have a thousand toys and they don’t really play with them…
  • Books

Presents for the host dad

  • “Make your own cider”- set
  • Gift card (I would go for a PlayStation one, but find out what your host dad likes!)
  • Dash cam
  • Skull-shaped shot glasses (last year’s present)
  • Socks

Presents for the host mum

  • Spa gift set (just go to Boots and pick whichever one)
  • Gift card
  • Gin/wine/whatever she likes to drink
  • Scented candles
  • Jewellery
