How to Earn Extra Money as an Au Pair

Before I start talking about all the different ways you can earn extra money as an au pair, I want to make one thing clear: your priority should be with the host family and the kids. That’s your main job, and you should always keep this in mind when applying for jobs.

Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way: being an au pair doesn’t earn a lot of money. I love doing it, and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything in the world, but sometimes it is nice to have that little bit of extra money so you can go out and travel.

Here are some ways for you to earn extra money as an au pair:

  1. Download Sweatcoin on your phone

You’re looking after children, so you probably walk a lot. This app pays you for the steps you take. While it takes a while to actually get enough steps to get paid in money (20,000 steps will get you a £1000 pay-out), you can also get plenty of discounts and other rewards.

  2. Get a part-time job

This one might not work for everyone – if your host kids are really young, you probably don’t have time for this. I get quite a lot of free time during the day and do work as a freelance translator when the kids are at school. This is something I was already doing before I became an au pair, though, and it’s not the most steady source of income.

I recommend looking for jobs on the weekend or something that allows you to earn some extra money in your neighbourhood (walking dogs, babysitting, cleaning, etc.). These jobs give you more flexibility when it comes to working hours. And that’s important because you need to be able to look after the children if they are ill and can’t go to school.

  3. Sell stuff you no longer use

If you brought too many clothes with you (like I did), try selling them online on apps like DePop or eBay.

  4. Do online work

There’s a lot of work to do online. Sign up on websites like UpWork and Fiverr and offer your services. This can be writing, marketing, social media, teaching a language… Whatever you’re good at!

I’m really captivated by that Sweatcoin app! I work an office job now, but man I could have used that at one of my old jobs on a big campus, I think I was logging 10,000 steps a day!

My daughter in law’s sister does it. She was hosted abroad recently to au pair, which was nice for her because it did allow her to travel.

I had to google what “Au-pair” Ha ha. I always give kudos to host parents. I had a bad experience doing that in my 20’s.

I think I was in my 20’s or 30’s when I worked as a babysitter. It was not easy. The longest job I took was for a weekend–by the end of it I swore never to have kids!
